  云南临沧市和双江县西部与耿马县交界处，南北走向的横断山系支脉邦马山。主峰叫勐库大雪山（临沧地区还有永德大雪山、邦东大雪山），海拔3200多米，位于双江县勐库镇境内。作为是世界上最大的古茶树群，双江勐库大雪山野生古茶树群落直到1997年发生干旱时才被世人发现。在接下来的十几年里，这个野生古茶树群以其神秘的生存环境和极高的科研价值吸引了无数的专家学者前来考察调研。对于千年古茶树群的价值研究也一直在继续，这里是世界茶树起源中心之一。

   临沧大雪山自然保护区，位于澜沧江中游，漫湾电站附近大朝山电站西岸的临沧境内，紧靠214国道，临沧邦东公路直达景区腹地。在临沧市东面，澜沧江西岸，临翔区城东北，直线距离19公里。保护区地跨两县即临翔区的东北部和云县东南部，大雪山南坡为临翔区地域，北坡为云县地域。保护区总面积20620.5公顷（折合309307.5亩），合206.2平方公里，其中临翔区域14067公顷（211005亩），云县部分6553.5公顷（98302.5亩）。




  大雪山濒临汹涌而过的澜沧江，居高临下，虎踞龙盘，地势雄奇。保护区最高海拔为主峰大雪山峰巅，高3429.6 米，最低海拔在保护区边沿为1620米，相对高差1809.6米，由于高差大，河流切割形成了地形破碎峡谷纵横的自然地貌。临沧大雪山保护区南临北回归线，气候属我国气候带划分的亚热带，但因受控于孟加拉湾西南暖湿气流，加之地势较高，气温值相属于北亚热带和南温带，即温凉气候，2500米以下相属于北亚热带，为暖湿性温凉气候，2500米以上相属于南温带，为寒温性温凉气候。海拔3000米以上地带，冬春两季有三、四个月的积雪过程，即每年的12月至翌年的3月间，主峰一带积雪覆盖，白雪皑皑，大雪山由此得名。景观随立体气候和季度变化而变化，山顶白雪皑皑，云海日出，赏心悦目，山腰林海茫茫，杜鹃花成林成片，四季花卉变换无穷，山间瀑布、溪流终年不断，对游客有较强的吸引力。
